ABOUT

And She Wore White was founded in May 2018 in London, England as a non-partisan, generalist platform for original and critical scholarship that embraces all aspects of identity, intersectionality, and -ism. Our global outlook welcomes all topics, including (but not limited to) law, history, politics, economics, sciences, literature, and the arts, expounding ideas from exploratory and creative perspectives.

Diversity is the essence of this platform. Our central ethos is about generating an inclusive and empowering environment that is open to persons of all genders, races, cultures, ethnicities, (sexual) orientations, and belief systems. In particular, we embrace all feminist narratives, from the more conservative to the more liberal—every perspective matters.

We hope to start new waves of conversation, while not being afraid to tackle areas that may be difficult, unpopular, or controversial. As part of this pledge, And She Wore White values its platform and social media never for the sake of popularity or profit, but rather to provide a space for often unconventional and minority voices. Here, equality is most prised. We ultimately make a point of eschewing the popular desire to attract mass followers, preferring to relate to you alone. For it matters most to us if just one person can find interest, inspiration, or understanding in our scholarship—we thus strive to be meaningful.

And She Wore White aims to uphold the highest standards of integrity. Therefore, our 2019-20 constitution promises never to advertise to you (embedded or otherwise), sell your data, or exploit our message purely for the sake of monetary gain. As such, we are entirely self-funded and comprised only of volunteers.

As you can see, And She Wore White is gradually changing the narrative. Will you join us?

The Meaning Behind the Name

The name ‘And She Wore White’—which invokes connotations in popular consciousness to the Western bride—was specifically chosen as an objective benchmark to trigger critical and creative discussion of its underlying assumptions.

‘She’

While feminist movements have been heavily focused on the plights of ‘she,’ And She Wore White hosts a diversified collection of narratives that explore varying experiences of sex/gender. While female empowerment is an essential aspect of this platform, we also encourage discussions of ‘he,’ ‘they,’ and all other (non-binary) gender identities. The very concept of ‘gender’ may also be questioned in some narratives. As such, all approaches are equally valid and open to engagement.

Traditional Western wedding imagery

The image of the Western bride serves as a reference point for discussion on the topics of intersectionality, religious, cultural, and ethnic identities, sexuality/heteronormativity, and the concept of ‘marriage.’ And She Wore White embraces all perspectives and cultural viewpoints, tackling questions such as ‘what is the feminist significance of marriage?’. Again, all opinions are valid.

‘Wore’

Self-expression through clothing and fashion—including, more fundamentally, how we are seen or perceived by the ‘other’—is highlighted by this reference. Thus, from a broader perspective And She Wore White often explores ‘identity’ in an abstract, self-other dynamic.

‘White’

The bridal connotations of the colour white—as traditionally symbolizing purity and/or virginity—bring into view varying subject areas, including (but not limited to) the topics of religious and cultural symbolism, the fetishisation of youth, the virginity concept, self-worth, and sexual empowerment. Here, And She Wore White is open to all contrasting perspectives, eschewing a monolithic view.

Identity, Intersectionality, -Ism

Our slogan, ‘Identity – Intersectionality – Ism’, is fundamental to our scholarship architecture, with each article falling within at least one of these three, open-ended categories. The categorisation of each work remains the prerogative of the author(s) and it is completely open to you, as the reader, to critique these decisions for yourself and perhaps also the very idea of categorisation.

Identity’ may encompass pieces that engage with the ‘self’ and ‘other,’ both as abstract concepts and more specifically. This may include (but is not limited to) cultural, religious, racial, ethnic, sexual, age-based, and familial identities.

Intersectionality’ may embrace incredibly nuanced and overlapping narratives. Scholarship on the very idea of ‘intersectionality’ is also welcome.

-Ism’ may include any thematic and/or residual subject matters, such as veganism, romanticism, environmentalism, and atheism. This category could arguably be interpreted as the most open-ended.
